This review addresses the role of autophagy in the formation and maintenance of sarcoid granulomas in the lungs, as well as in the resolution of inflammation associated with pulmonary diseases. Autophagy is briefly described as a fundamental mechanism for maintaining cellular and tissue homeostasis. The involvement of autophagy-regulating proteins in immune-mediated pulmonary disorders, including pulmonary sarcoidosis(PS), is discussed. Particular attention is given to the activation of the mTORC1 (mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1) signaling pathway - a key suppressor of autophagy - and its contribution to the pathogenesis of PS. Despite the recognized importance of autophagic and lysosomal pathways in inflammatory regulation, current data on the role of lysosomal degradation in the development and resolution of inflammation in PS remain scarce. This highlights the need for further research aimed at identifying potential therapeutic targets for more effective treatment strategies.
